Cada vez hay más latinos en Estados Unidos, ya somos más de 57,4 millones. También hay más inmigrantes, y cada vez más diversos, aunque dos de cada tres siguen siendo mexicanos. Y cada vez hay más hogares en los que se habla en español, según los datos publicados hoy por el Censo referentes a 2016.
¿Cuántos latinos hay en Estados Unidos? La población total del país ha crecido en 2016 hasta los 323 millones de habitantes, y los latinos suponen 57,4 millones, es decir, el 21,6% del total. En otras palabras, uno de cada cinco estadounidenses es latino. En 2015, el porcentaje era muy similar (un 0,3% menor), pero había 900.000 latinos menos en el país.
¿Hay más inmigrantes? La población total creció en 2016, pero el número de inmigrantes que no tienen la nacionalidad estadounidense descendió ligeramente: hay 90.000 menos. En total, hay 22,5 millones de ciudadanos extranjeros en Estados Unidos.
Pero eso no quiere decir sin embargo que haya menos inmigrantes. De hecho, hay más: lo que sucede es que muchos de ellos ya han conseguido la nacionalidad. En total, hay 43,7 millones de ciudadanos que nacieron en otros países y ahora viven en Estados Unidos, contando los que tienen ya la nacionalidad y los que no. Un año antes, eran 43,3 millones, es decir, casi 450.000 menos.
¿De dónde vienen los inmigrantes? De los 57,4 millones de latinos, 36,3 millones son mexicanos, es decir, prácticamente dos de cada tres; sin embargo, el porcentaje ha bajado ligeramente. En cifras totales, ha aumentado el número de inmigrantes de todas las nacionalidades excepto Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panamá, Perú, Uruguay y España.
Cuánta gente habla español? Cada vez más. El 78,8% de los hogares estadounidenses hablan en inglés, un 0,2% menos que en 2015. El porcentaje de hogares hispanohablantes ha subido en igual medida, dos décimas, hasta el 12,2%. En cifras totales, son 14,5 millones, 225.000 más que un año antes. Y también ha aumentado, aunque muy ligeramente, el número de hogares en los que no se habla inglés no por voluntad sino por desconocimiento del idioma: son el 2,7% del total.
