El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, ha afirmado que tiene «muchos problemas» con la Unión Europea (UE) y que la relación comercial del bloque comunitario con su país es «injusta».
En una entrevista con el canal británico ITV grabada el pasado jueves en Davos (Suiza) y emitida hoy, el presidente estadounidense señaló que la postura de la UE con respecto al comercio con EU irá en su «detrimento» en el futuro.
«Y, aun así, ellos nos envían su producto a nosotros. Sin impuestos, con muy pocos impuestos. Es muy injusto», insistió Trump, que aseguró que si él estuviera en la posición de la primera ministra británica, Theresa May, negociaría con mayor «dureza» su salida de la Unión.
El presidente estadounidense dijo que él «habría adoptado una actitud distinta» a la de May en las negociaciones con Bruselas y «habría dicho que la Unión Europea no es tan maravillosa como se supone que es».
Trump declaró que mantiene una «muy buena relación, a pesar de que mucha gente piensa que no», con la jefa de Gobierno británica, y sostuvo que la mandataria conservadora está haciendo «un muy buen trabajo» al frente del Ejecutivo.
«Apoyo mucho de lo que hace y mucho de lo que dice. Y os apoyo mucho (al Reino Unido), militarmente. Lo que quiero decir es que acudiríamos en vuestra defensa si ocurriera algo, lo que, espero, no pasará nunca. Soy un tremendo partidario del Reino Unido», afirmó Trump.
Al ser cuestionado sobre los polémicos mensajes por Twitter de la organización de extrema derecha Britain First que compartió en noviembre, lo que provocó tensiones con el Ejecutivo de May, el mandatario estadounidense se mostró dispuesto a disculparse.”
«Si me está diciendo que esta gente es horrible, racista, yo ciertamente me disculparía si quiere que lo haga», expresó Trump al periodista Piers Morgan.
«Yo soy la persona menos racista que cualquiera va a conocer. Ciertamente, no estaba mostrando mi apoyo hacia nadie (con aquellos mensajes) y no sabía nada sobre ellos (Britain First)», argumentó.
En imágenes de los momentos previos a comenzar la entrevista, que fueron emitidas esta noche por la cadena ITV, Trump asegura que May le ha invitado a visitar «dos veces» el Reino Unido este año.
Morgan aseguró hoy en un artículo en «The Mail on Sunday» que Trump puede acudir a Londres para una visita de trabajo en julio y regresar al Reino Unido en octubre para una visita de Estado, un calendario que Downing Street, despacho oficial de May, no ha confirmado.
Un portavoz de la primera ministra señaló que «se ha cursado una invitación, que ha sido aceptada, y los detalles se determinarán en el debido momento».
Trump dijo asimismo que no ha recibido una invitación para asistir el próximo 19 de mayo a la boda del príncipe Enrique con su prometida, la actriz estadounidense Meghan Markle, en el castillo de Windsor (centro de Inglaterra).
«Quiero que sean felices, quiero realmente que sean felices. Parecen una pareja maravillosa», afirmó el presidente al ser preguntado por el enlace real.
Durante el viernes pasado, Trump sostuvo varias reuniones bilaterales en la localidad alpina de Davos, Suiza.
Una de ellas fue con la primera ministra de Reino Unido, Theresa May, en la que afirmó la relación y compromiso por trabajar en conjunto para lograr oportunidades económicas y hacer frente a los retos que representa la seguridad nacional.

Morgan said today in an article in «The Mail on Sunday» that Trump can go to London for a work visit in July and return to the United Kingdom in October for a state visit, a calendar that Downing Street, May’s official office, has not confirmed.
