Janeiro, estado brasileño cuya seguridad está en manos del Ejército desde hace tres semanas, informaron hoy fuentes oficiales.

El tiroteo fue provocado por dos hombres armados que llegaron en un vehículo hasta la tradicional plaza en el barrio de Laranjeiras y que hicieron al menos treinta disparos contra algunas de las personas que estaban en la misma.

En el momento del tiroteo, hacia las 23:00 hora local (2:00 GMT de este jueves), decenas de personas estaban en la plaza, que acostumbra a ser frecuentada por clientes de bares de la vecindad que prefieren beber en la calle, por lo que el incidente generó pánico y carreras.

Un hombre que estaba frente a un bar fue tiroteado en la cabeza y murió de forma inmediata, en tanto que otro que lo acompañaba recibió un disparo en la espalda y también falleció tras ser atropellado por los pistoleros en su fuga.

Un taxista que pasaba por la plaza en el momento del tiroteo sufrió una herida de bala en la barriga y fue conducido a un hospital, en donde su estado de salud fue declarado como estable tras una delicada cirugía.

La decisión cede a los militares el control de la seguridad en Río hasta finales de 2018 tras la ola de violencia que el año pasado causó seis mil 731 muertes, entre las que se cuentan las de más de 100 policías y diez niños alcanzados por «balas perdidas».

En enero el estado de Río registró 649 homicidios, un número en un 7.6 % mayor al del mismo mes de 2017 y que supone una media de 21 muertes violentas diarias.
