JPSO says woman with 3 kids in car bites cop, flees police

A woman is under arrest after allegedly biting a cop and leading deputies on three chases, two with her small children in the car.

«A husband called and reported his wife missing,» Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto said.

The man believed his spouse was having a psychotic breakdown.

«She had three of her children in the car,» the sheriff explained. «She passed by with children in the car.»

Lopinto says they conducted a traffic stop around 2:00am.

«She stopped and actually bit one of our officers and then took off again in the vehicle with her three children: a thirteen year old, a six year old and a four year old in the vehicle.»

He says she then fled, but deputies called off the pursuit because they didn’t want to further endanger the kids.

«Later Harahan ended up picking up the vehicle.»

The sheriff says those officers also decided to cancel the pursuit.

Later police got word that the woman left two of the children on the side of the road.

«The six year old and the four year old were actually brought to a local hospital here by a good Samaritan… being told that the six year old was told to throw the four year old out of the car and was also told to get out.»

Around 6:00am Lopinto says deputies spotted the vehicle after that and did chase the driver with the 13 year old in the car.

During the pursuit, he says, the woman rammed two police cars. No one was injured in those crashes.  The Sheriff says the officer who was bit suffered minor injuries.

The suspect eventually turned down a dead end street and deputies were able to arrest her and get the 13 year old to safety.

Lopinto says the other children are also in good health
