Turkey could close land border with Kurdistan

The country threatened to close Habur’s passage in response to the region’s referendum on independence

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today threatened to close the border crossing of Habur, the only one linking Turkey with northern Iraq, at any time if Baghdad guarantees the delivery of goods needed to serve the Kurdish population Iraqi.

Erdogan has stated that he is in contact with the Iraqi federal government to seek a common strategy after Iraq’s Kurdistan self-determination referendum, held on 25 September, in which he won 92.73% of the votes, according to the report. newspaper Hürriyet.

Ankara, like Baghdad, considered the referendum illegal and invalid and pledged to cooperate with central Iraqi authorities to seek a coordinated response.

«We have completely closed our airspace to the regional government of northern Iraq,» the Turkish president told a group of journalists during the return flight from his visit to Poland.

«The talks continue on what will be done with respect to land borders,» added Erdogan, who recalled that a possible closure of Habur’s passage could occur «at any time.»

That border crossing is in the hands of Iraqi Kurdistan and the central Iraqi government demands that it be brought under its control.

Ankara has remarked that in no case will it tolerate a Kurdish state along its border and accused the Iraqi Kurdistan government of trying to seize control of «regions like Kirkuk by force, as an occupying power.»

On Tuesday, Kurdish forces withdrew without resistance from disputed territories with the Federal Government as the Iraqi army and militias advanced and seized control of even the city of Kirkuk, surrounded by oil wells.

Turkey, which is fighting the Kurdish PKK guerrillas, fears an independent Kurdish state on its borders will increase secessionist tension in the south-east of the country, where the Kurdish population is concentrated.
