A Carnival season unlike any other as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, begins today in the once cheerful and colorful streets of New Orleans, Louisiana, this time without dances and parades in the narrow streets of the French Quarter, which usually attract thousands of tourists each year
The Mardi Gras season always begins on January 6th and ends on the so-called «Fat Tuesday», which this year falls on February 16th
The season is usually marked by extravagant dances and parades where costumed riders throw necklaces and trinkets to the crowds of people who crowd the streets, drinking and singing
However, this year the coronavirus ended with that event, considered one of the main economic incomes for the city, due to the amount of visitors it summons every year
Without parades or chants, the imagination of the locals did not prevent them from looking for a way to celebrate and generate income
Somehow we had to find a socially distant way to celebrate
And so it was that the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc, a club that annually pays tribute to the fallen French hero with a parade through the French Quarter at the official start of the Carnival season, this year decided to organize a «Tableaux de Jeanne d’Arc».
There, viewers will pass by several «tableaux,» a French term for «living images,» which will include stations of costumed revelers fighting like knights, sharpening their swords, and roasting a pig in celebration
«Life as we were used to is gone, so we had to look for different ways to do things this year,» said Antoinette de Alteriis, one of the club’s captains
The «Phunny Phorty Phellows,» a group that usually meets on January 6 to mark the start of the season with a costume party on a streetcar, is also altering its plans
The only thing that will not change in this carnival is the tradition of eating cake, better known as the «king cake».
The sweet cakes, which are decorated with the official Carnival colors (purple, green and gold), can only be eaten from January 6th.
