Me motivan muchas cosas.

¿Describe Guatemala?

¿Where were you born?
I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. My parents are from Guatemala.

• Talk about yourself?
I am the Spanish radio play by play voice of the New Orleans Saints and the LSU Tiger football team. I also work as a contributor and board operator at 104.5 ESPN Radio Baton Rouge.
I was also an intern at the New Orleans Pelicans Radio Network and a former host of the NBA team’s official postgame radio show.
I have always loved sports, and sports broadcasting is one of my life’s passions. I grew up as a diehard fan of the Saints, the Pelicans and LSU football, and I am fortunate enough to have covered all teams as a broadcaster. I also love to travel, meet new people and constantly talk sports with my buddies for fun.

• What do you consider your greatest challenges?

The career I am still trying to build for myself can be challenging, especially now during the pandemic.
I have been fortunate enough keep the work that I do have, but I’m still striving for something greater. It can be challenging at times, but I enjoy what I do very much and embrace all the challenges along the way.

• What do you consider your biggest flaws?
Well, I’m not sure I would call them flaws. But we can all always improve in certain areas.
I think I can make myself more organized in my work and in my life. I also have made a point to think of the “big picture” when making certain decisions, instead of just considering the short term.
In addition, I have tried to accept criticism better from others and not get defensive. I’ve also become more open minded and always try to improve when it comes to considering other peoples’ viewpoints.

• Where I study?
I am a proud graduate of Brother Martin High School (2013) and Louisiana State University (2017). I majored in broadcast journalism at LSU with a minor in business administration.

• how did you become interested in journalism?
Since I was a child, I have always wanted to broadcast live sports.
My family has had season tickets to the Saints ever since the early 2000s, and from a young age, I would bring a portable radio to every game in the superdome so I could listen to the world-class narration of Jim Henderson and Hokie Gagan (R.I.P). They helped me to learn the game and how to bring it to life for their audience. I wanted to be just like them.
I also owe a lot to Ernesto Schwiekert for giving me my first opportunity to broadcast LSU games for his station when I was in high school. When I got that opportunity as an 18-year-old, I knew it was the start of something special. And I have had incredible experiences in radio since that day.
I have always thought the commentators play a very important role in bringing these games to life for people. They are just as much a part of the game as the players on the field, and I have always wanted to play that role.
I am fortunate enough to have grown up in great sports town with excellent play by play broadcasters, and that enhanced my love for sportscasting.

• How do you enjoy working for ESPN?
I love working for 104.5 ESPN Radio Baton Rouge and Guaranty Media.
It is a private owned company and being part of the team here feels like being part of a family.
We have the best sports programing in the state and some of the best in the country, and I’m happy to contribute to that on a daily basis. Also, since we are an ESPN affiliate, I have gotten to interact with some well-known athletes and sports media personalities.
As an up and coming broadcaster, I am happy to be around excellent sports talk hosts like t-Bob Herbert, Matt Moscona and Jimmy Ott. I’ve learned a lot from working with them and being around them.
It has also been interesting to see us handle the pandemic as a company. It has been tough, but everyone has done an outstanding job.
I enjoy working here very much, and I am gaining valuable experience every day.

• What motivates you every day?
I am motivated by many things.
I am so proud of the things I have accomplished in my career and knowing that even better things could be on the horizon motivates me to do my best every day. I still have so much to accomplish in my career, and I try to take the steps to get there every single day.
I’m also motivated by my family and my girlfriend, who I want to be proud of me. In addition, I take being an NFL broadcaster very seriously.
I know many broadcasters would love to have the honor of broadcasting NFL games, and this motivates me to be prepared and at my best for every game.
Our listening audience also gives me motivation. Saints fans are the best, and I always do my very best to call a good game for them in a professional manner.
• What do you like to narrate the Saints of New Orleans?
Everything!
The Saints have the most passionate fanbase in the NFL, and it fills me with pride to bring the games to life for the Latino section of the Who dat Nation.
Football is America’s game and my favorite sport and calling the game on the highest level gives me a satisfaction unlike anything else. These guys are the best in the world at what they do, and I have the honor of broadcasting their games, a privilege some people spend their whole lives working for.
The team is successful now, and the games are a lot more fun when the Saints are winning. Victor and Juan Carlos are outstanding broadcasters who I enjoy working with very much.
We are great friends and always have a blast together.
The last three years have been the most enjoyable of my professional career. Being the Spanish voice of the Saints is an immense honor.

• Tell us about your family
My mother moved to the U.S. from Guatemala to attend LSU in the 80s. When she arrived, she had no knowledge of American football.
However, football is more than a sport in Louisiana. When you consider all the tradition, pageantry and gathering that comes with the game, it is a way of life. My mother used LSU football to engrain herself into the Louisiana culture, and she absolutely fell in love with the game.
Years later, she and my stepfather, Luis, started bringing me to games and they passed that love onto me. They have always been incredibly supportive, and I owe a lot of my success to them.
My sister, Mariana, also loves sports and works for the New Orleans pelicans in the marketing department.
My father presently lives in Guatemala and also attended LSU. He’s also been very supportive.

• What is your favorite hobby?
Watching and discussing sports.

• What is your favorite food?
I am a sucker for a good cheeseburger and cheesy fries. Also love a good crawfish pasta.

• Who is your favorite artist?
Some of my favorite rappers are T.I, Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne.
Some of my favorite bands are Blink 182 and the Red-Hot Chili Peppers. I also like Bhad Bunny and Daddy Yankee.

Describe Guatemala?
I’m sorry to say I haven’t been to Guatemala in several years. I would love for that to change.
Guatemala is a lovely place filled with great people.
To tie this back to sports: I have enjoyed all my sporting experiences in the U.S. But experiencing a soccer game in Mateo Flores Stadium is a different experience entirely.
Guatemalans love their soccer team and are just as passionate as the football fans in Louisiana. One of the experiences in sports I most look forward to is the team finally breaking through and reaching a world cup.
The Saints won a Superbowl, so anything is possible!
