«El poder que tenemos disponible no será suficiente para bombear la ciudad en el tiempo necesario».

La turbina eléctrica paralizada abastece a la mayoría de las estaciones de bombeo que sirven a la orilla este de Nueva Orleans, reduciendo la capacidad de drenar el agua de las tormentas de las calles. Las estaciones de bombeo de Argel, Lower 9th Ward y New Orleans East no fueron afectadas, dijo Landrieu, ni tampoco había servicio de agua potable o alcantarillado en toda la ciudad.

A turbine that provides power to most of New Orleans’ pumping stations crippled that piece of equipment, leading city officials to warn of possible flooding Thursday and during the weekend.

«We are at risk if we have a massive rain event that comes up on us at the last minute and creates the kind of flooding that we had,» said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu at an early morning news conference, referring to recent flooding in the city.

«The power we have available to us now will not be sufficient enough to pump the city out in the time needed.»

The crippled power turbine powers most of the pumping stations that serve the east bank of New Orleans, lowering the capacity to drain storm water from the streets.

Pumping stations in Algiers, the Lower 9th Ward and New Orleans East were not affected, Landrieu said, nor was drinking water or sewer service throughout the city.

Prior to the mayor’s news conference, a statement from his office urged residents living in the «affected area to move their vehicles to higher ground, take necessary actions to protect personal property, and stay off roadways during rainstorms unless an emergency makes it absolutely necessary to do so.»
