It is known as technological insomnia to sleep disorder that occurs linked to the use of technology, especially mobile, with screens. We can include here smartphones, tablets and notebooks, mainly, being second to the TVs.
This single definition already puts most of us on guard. It is very rare that we escape the custom of performing one last check on the mobile phone before we fall asleep. The problem is that that checkup tends to be exaggerated, and it goes from about five minutes to an hour or more.
The Internet and social media always offer more to keep us connected. A message brings a link, a page suggests a video or we catch up with what we had to respond to and that we could not for the daily trajín.
When we want to stop, too much time has passed, and we are reduced by total hours of effective sleep. If the cycle does not stop and repeats constantly, the body begins to fail in its functions.
The problem of sleep disorders is generally quite common. It is estimated that a quarter of the population suffers from some sleep disturbance, and up to half can cause some kind of trouble to fall asleep immediately while in bed. As for technological insomnia, possibly a third of children under the age of 18 are affected.
The point is that a bad break affects the next day during the vigil. We are less productive, less effective, more deaf in our reflexes and therefore more dangerous in performing actions such as driving.
Common insomnia or technological insomnia
Insomnia exists as a sleep disorder many centuries ago. And, despite his old age, it remains a prevalent problem. Up to 10% of the adult population suffers from chronic insomnia, meaning that they experience problems with falling asleep on a daily basis. Among children, up to a third of them have unhealthy sleep habits.
Within technological insomnia we can distinguish two forms of technology capable of generating it. However, each does not produce the same amount of effect.
1. Passive
Passive display technology is, for example, the TV. It is so named because it does not require a regular interaction of the viewer. It is possible to turn on the TV, set a channel and leave it fixed to watch it for hours. The screen stimulates the brain, but at a greater distance than unatablet, for example.
2. Activates
It’s the technology that seeks interaction across the screen. Online video games are an example of antonomasia. The stimulus they cause in the retina and brain is extreme, activating many areas and spreading blue light to the eyes uninterruptedly. Social media has a similar effect, especially from brain stimulation because of the interaction they represent.
