Balance of aircraft crash casualty on landing at Istanbul airport

One dead and injured 157 left on Wednesday the spectacular crash of a plane that landed at an airport in the Turkish city of Istanbul went off the runway and was left in three pieces.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737 from Pegasus Airlines, carried 177 people on board and came from the coastal city of Izmir.

Arriving at Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the outskirts of Istanbul, the aircraft fell victim to strong winds and heavy rains and ended up coming off the runway, according to television footage.

The cockpit was completely sectioned at the front and a fire was declared on board, which was controlled by firefighters.

Most passengers were able to leave the aircraft on their own, by means of a ladder at the back, or by walking over the wings of the appliance.

«At the moment 157 wounded are hospitalized and one of our fellow citizens lost his life,» said Health Minister Fahrettin Koca in a meeting with the press.

Passengers caught in the fuselage

«Some passengers left the plane on their own, but others are trapped inside and our first responders are striving to free them,» the transport minister Cahit Turhan had pointed out.

The plane slid «along about 60 meters» after leaving the runway, explained Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya.

The aircraft was accompanied by 171 passengers and six crew members are believed to have TRT public television reported. Among the passage were 12 children, and people of different nationalities, although at the moment there were no more details.

The two pilots of the aircraft, one Turkish and the other South Korean, were seriously injured, according to various media outlets.

Planes arriving at Sabiha Gokcen Airport were retaken to Istanbul Ataturk Airport, 60 kilometres away, NTV announced.

Istanbul is an important aeronautical center for all traffic between Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants the city to become the world’s first air destination, thanks to the 2018 opening of the giant Ataturk Airport.

However, the metropolis, with more than 15 million inhabitants, regularly suffers strong winds because of its geographical location.

In winter, weather conditions can be harsh, and minor incidents have occurred in the past.

In 2018, a Pegasus airline plane also left the runway in Trabzon, in northeastern Turkey, to the edge of a cliff. No one was injured in that accident.
