The graphic novel of Galán, on the 30th anniversary of his death
Journalists Daniel Valero and Javier Forero were behind the book of Intermediate Editors.
No memory is exhausted: its possibilities in forms and senses are endless. Hence, any loss is not limited exclusively to the pain of the day the events occurred, the following weeks or when an anniversary is commemorated, but it is an event that continues to occur.
The publication of the documentary comic Galán: the chronicle of another death announced ** allows us to understand this social function that memory has. However, this does not imply that memory is a dialogue with the past, but it makes sense of the present. This graphic work, in addition to the documentary value of the investigative, testimonial and archival exercise about a man and his time, encloses the question about that fact at the current juncture, in the light of a different way of telling the story.
But the memory is not unique, but it is composed of multiple voices: not only those of those who were closer to the murdered leader, but also the look that the new generations have of him. This is significant in the graphic proposal created by four different illustrators, since each of them printed in their drawings the features with which they were hearing from Luis Carlos Galán while they were growing up.
The publication of the documentary comic Galán: the chronicle of another death announced allows us to understand this social function that memory has.
In this work, which shows memory as an untamed field and impossible to adjust to a form, these four views show a plural Galan whose political discourse is reflected in the way each illustrator stopped in certain features.
Galán is a book in which different narrative genres converge: the dialogues humanize the historical character, the photographs anchor the reader’s gaze to Colombia in the 70s and 80s of the last century, and the different styles of illustration show us the nuances of A leader who does not run out.
However, there is a surgical work by the scriptwriters, who manage to create a work about the past that allows us to understand the present.
This preparation of styles and formats makes the new work on Galán a significant book in the looks of the recent past, especially the year of 1989, as many analysts have agreed to rate this as one of the most violent in the country’s history.
