La víctima que demandó por pederastia al cardenal australiano George Pell, otrora número 3 del Vaticano, dijo hoy que le resulta «difícil» sentirse reconfortado por la sentencia de seis años de cárcel contra el prelado.
La víctima, que solamente se conoce como «J», fue uno de los dos niños del coro de 13 años de la iglesia St Patrick’s que sufrió los abusos de Pell tras oficiar una misa en diciembre de 1996.
Semanas después, «J», quien junto a la otra víctima gozaba de una beca en la prestigiosa escuela St Kevin’s a cambio de que formara parte del coro, fue agredido sexualmente en el mismo lugar por el entonces arzobispo de Melbourne.
«Es difícil para mí permitirme sentir la gravedad de este momento. El momento en que la sentencia fue emitida. El momento en que se hace justicia. Me resulta difícil ahora mismo sentirme reconfortado con este desenlace», dijo «J» en un comunicado transmitido a través de su abogada.
«Agradezco que el tribunal haya reconocido lo que fue infringido contra mí cuando era un niño. Sin embargo, no tengo descanso», añadió.
La víctima subrayó que «todo está ensombrecido» por el recurso de apelación que la defensa de George Pell, la máxima jerarquía de la iglesia católica en ser condenada por pederastia, presentó contra el veredicto de culpabilidad y que será evaluado en junio.
«J» recordó en su comunicado lo difícil que fue comparecer y ser interrogado por las partes en relación al abuso que sufrió, uno de ellos por penetración oral y tocamiento de sus genitales, que denunció después de que «R», muriera en 2014 por una sobredosis de heroína.
El padre de esta segunda víctima se mostró «decepcionado por la corta condena» y expresó su tristeza por lo que considera un castigo inadecuado por estos delitos, según indicaron sus abogados en un comunicado.
George Pell, quien fue sentenciado hoy a seis años de cárcel, deberá pasar al menos 3 años y 8 meses en prisión antes de poder pedir la libertad condicional.
El juez Peter Kidd, del Tribunal del estado de Victoria, que lo condenó, remarcó que el prelado de 77 años actuó con «sorprendente arrogancia», de forma consciente al recordar además que abusó vestido de sus atuendos religiosos contra J en dos oportunidades, abusando de su poder y violando la confianza del menor.
