The man, 40 and a few years old, is arrested on Thursday because he had an arrest warrant pending against him.
A man who said he was a relative and then a friend of «Chapo» Guzman and tried to attend his trial in Brooklyn court was arrested on Thursday because he had an arrest warrant pending against him, the AFP said.
The man, 40 and a few years old, entered the room where journalists, prosecutors and lawyers of Mexican capo Joaquín «Chapo» Guzmán wait for the jury to announce whether or not he is guilty of trafficking more than 155 tons of drugs to the United States. of three months of trial, and sat in the seats reserved for relatives.
When a sheriff asked if he was from the family, the man replied that he was in a bad mood. The sheriff then ordered him to leave the room and go to another room, opposite, where the trial is broadcast by closed circuit television.
Some eight deputies took him out afterwards and took him away in handcuffs. A security guard said he had a warrant for his arrest, but the prosecution has not explained why.
Before his arrest, the man said his name was René Javier Rivera Martínez, who was Italian and a friend of the «Chapo», not a relative. He said he came to New York for 15 days, to have an operation in his mouth after a motorcycle accident.
He said his family is well known and works in finance and fashion, and that they have houses in Milan, Ibiza, Madrid, Malibu and Mexico. «I am the black sheep of my family,» he said, before telling his plans to attend the Oscar awards ceremony.
The trial of «Chapo» is open to the public, and incredible characters have attended, many of them fans of the mythical capo, like a couple of Mexicans who reside in California and who attended the process to celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary, or a woman known as «the reverend», dressed in a black priest’s jacket, who kneels in front of the court at dawn to pray for the capo, Bible in hand.
The jury has already deliberated for more than 19 hours, over four days. At his request, they received hundreds of thousands of pages of nine days of testimonies from three ex-collaborators of the «Chapo» on Thursday.
«Considering the questions of yesterday, that want to review more testimonies, I do not think there is a verdict today,» Chapo lawyer Eduardo Balarezo told reporters on entering the court.
«Joaquín is very animated, very calm, awaiting the verdict,» he added.
