Animal shelters Jefferson Parish at the center of the controversy

Two animal shelters in Jefferson Parish are at the center of new research.

Parish officials said they take this issue seriously. So seriously, in fact, that the director of both animal shelters is on leave with pay while the investigation of the parish is ongoing.
Within the animal shelters run by the parish, two former employees have described potentially problematic problems. Both are making accusations about how animals are treated and alleging discrimination and sexual harassment against employees.

The controversy dominated the session of the council on Wednesday.

«Sexual harassment things happened, I was talking about that, but many employees are afraid to talk,» said a former worker at an animal shelter.

Dozens of people filled the council chamber.

Many said that the accusations are correct.

«The dogs are covered in feces, they’re covered in feces, they’re running around,» said another person at the meeting.

Others who attended the meeting say that the accusations are only made up of former disgruntled workers.

«These are former employees who are angry about the dismissal,» said a shelter volunteer.

While the investigation continues, the hostel’s director, Robin Beaulieu, has been placed on paid administrative leave, which angered many in this crowd, who praised his performance.

«This has to be a lot of nonsense, I’ve seen everything that has happened, and those are the best managed shelters I’ve ever seen,» said one resident.

«These accusations are crazy,» said a shelter volunteer.

The parish administers shelters in both Eastbank and Westbank.

The administration and the council are not saying much.

«It’s a long process, there are a lot of employees, we’re good at what we do and we’re trained and qualified to do this research, just give us the time to do it right,» said Jefferson Parish Human Resources Director Peggy Barton.
