Regulate the entry of migrants through the southern border of the country

According to Olga Sánchez Cordero, in five days of government the new administration «solved» the problem of caravans

The Mexican government will effectively close the unauthorized entry on its southern border with Guatemala, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday, but did not give details about how it plans to do so.

Olga Sánchez Cordero, chief security official, said that the migrant caravans that crossed the border in October «is no longer a topic.»

«You know why it’s not a problem anymore, because in five days of this government we solved the problem, five days,» he said, referring to the first week since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office on December 1. «The United States was impressed.»

The new government has mobilized material and equipment to improve the conditions of the shelter for migrants in Tijuana, but the problems continue because the Central Americans are frustrated due to the slowness of the authorities of the United States to process their asylum requests.

Sánchez Cordero said that Mexico will promote a «Christmas in your house» campaign to motivate many of the migrants to return to their countries of origin for the Christmas holidays.

Regarding the entry of migrants, he said that the new government will end the practice of illegal crossings through the Suchiate River, which delimits a large part of the border between both countries.

«In the south there’s only going to be one entrance, on the bridge,» he said. «Anyone who wants to enter illegally we will say, ‘get in the queue and you will enter our country,'» he added.

However, Sánchez Cordero did not give details on how it would be done.
In October, the authorities tried unsuccessfully to briefly block the passage of a caravan of migrants across the river, placing police, army personnel, a helicopter and ships, but the migrants crossed anyway.
